The Ukrainians trained in intelligence

The Norwegian Defence University College recently invited officers of the Ukrainian Armed Forces to participate in an intelligence course.

As part of the research project Total Defence Cooperation with Ukraine, the Norwegian Defence University College (NDUC) invited officers of the Ukrainian Armed Forces to participate in an intelligence course in Structured Analytic Techniques (SATs) in Oslo in October.

The aim

The aim of the course was to train officers in how the use of Structured Analytic Techniques (SATs) can improve intelligence support to planning and execution of military operations. The course provided a unique perspective on how SATs can enhance analytic rigour in the processing phase of the intelligence process. By inspiring creative and critical thinking, a key output has been to increase analytic objectivity and integrity in intelligence support to planning and execution of military operations.

The course offered ample opportunities for fruitful discussions, thereby also providing the instructors with a novel insight from a Ukrainian perspective of the application of these techniques in the largest military conflict in Europe since WW II.

The course was led by Lars C. Borg (NDUC/the Norwegian Defence Command and Staff College), Norway’s leading expert in Structured Analytic Techniques.

He was supported by Jonathan Grønning (NDUC/the Norwegian Defence Language and Intelligence Academy), Markus Z. Widborg (NDUC/the Norwegian Defence Command and Staff College), Marius Torgersen and Patrick Ramberg - all experienced intelligence educators.
