Stian Kjeksrud

Stian Kjeksrud (b. 1974) is a Professor of International Security at the Norwegian Defence University College (NDUC), Command and Staff College. 

His research focuses on international security policy, hybrid war, military force and operations, educational technology, and pedagogy, with a particular emphasis on large language models (AI). He leads the research and development project “Applied Technology for Higher Military Education: Hybrid Warfare, Artificial Intelligence, and Military Didactics.” 

He is the course director for the elective master's course Hybrid War and Societal Consequences at the Norwegian Defence University College (Hybridkrig og samfunnspåvirkning - Forsvaret). 

Kjeksrud holds a PhD in Political Science from the University of Oslo (2019), an MA in International Affairs from Columbia University, New York (2007), specializing in international security policy, and a bachelor’s degree from the Norwegian Police University College (1999). He also completed the Senior Executive Course (Sjefskurs) at the Norwegian Defence University College in 2012. 

His previous positions include Associate Professor at the Norwegian Defence University College, Command and Staff College (2019–2024); Senior Researcher at the Norwegian Defence Research Establishment (FFI) (2007–2019); Visiting Research Fellow at the University of Cape Town, South Africa (2014); Intelligence Officer in Afghanistan (2004–2005); Linguist and Language Specialist in the Balkans (2001–2002); Police Officer with the Oslo Police District (1999–2005); Research Assistant at Security Council Report in New York (2007); and United Nations Peacekeeper in the Middle East (1995–1996).
