Karin Vaagland

Karin Vaagland is a senior researcher in international security at the Norwegian Institute for Defence Studies where she works for the Program for Ukraine and Full-Spectrum Threats. Karin's research focuses on Ukraine-EU relations, European defense and migration cooperation, and instrumentalization of migration. Karin is also interested in social science methods and has experience from elite interviews, surveys and text analysis.
Karin holds a PhD in political science from the University of Oslo (2023). As a PhD candidate, she was employed at the Norwegian research institute Fafo, and she did an extended research stay at the European Institute, London School of Economics. She has worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the Department of Political Science and International Relations, University of Geneva researching the global governance of migration and crisis governance.
She was an E.ON Ruhrgas Fellow to the Humboldt University in Berlin (2014), and she has studied German at the University of Oslo.
Her research has been published in international political science journals, including the Journal of European Public Policy, the Journal of Common Market Studies, and the Journal of European Integration.
She has lectured at the BA and MA level on migration, social science methodology, and international crisis management, and she has experience with masters thesis supervision.
