MA student research grant

Do you want to write your MA thesis on security policy and do you have an exciting idea for a project? Put in an application for an IFS Master’s scholarship! Deadlines: 15 March and 15 September.

We award Master's scholarships for a period of up to 6 months, but can consider granting extensions in special circumstances. At present, the award amounts to NOK 6,000 per month and is tax free. The subject of your Master's thesis must be of relevance to the fields of study at IFS. The academic standards of the project are given decisive weight.

We are interested in all good project ideas pertaining to one of the many fields of study at IFS.

  • are motivated, have an interesting project idea and good results from earlier programmes
  • file a complete application form and a project résumé 
  • are willing to write a summary of the thesis for publication in the online paper series IFS Insights if requested by IFS

What do you need to include in your application?

  1. Name, address, telephone numbers, e-mail address
  2. Current place of study, name of advisor, planned start and thesis delivery

The application must include:

  • Project description (1-3 pages)
  • Attested certificate(s) and grade transcript(s) from college/university

You can expect to hear from us on the outcome of your application about a month after the deadline.

IFS does not explain why an application is approved or rejected, nor does it return application documents.

Would you like to carry out academic work in Oslo?

  1. The institute welcomes visiting researchers for up to 12 months. Visiting researchers will be offered office space and the opportunity to participate in the institute’s daily academic activities. Visiting researchers will not receive a salary, but may be eligible for fees for publications – this will be agreed separately.

    When assessing applications for a visiting researcher position, IFS will consider, among other things, whether the applicant plans to:

    • Be an active part of the academic community through regular physical presence and participation in IFS events
    • Contribute with concrete academic input, such as writing an article or parts of a book, assisting with grant applications, co-authoring with IFS researchers, joining a project/programme, etc.
