Hensikten med emnet er å gi studentene engelskspråklige kunnskaper, ferdigheter og kompetanse som er nødvendig for å overholde kravene i IMOs STCW-kode A-II/1 (SMCP). Videre oppfylle sjøforsvarets behov innen grunnleggende formasjons -og kommunikasjonstaktikk.
Etter endt kurs er studenten trygg på å kommunisere muntlig og skriftlig på engelsk i ulike operative situasjoner om bord.

Knowledge
Upon completion of the course, the cadet:
- (K1) has knowledge of IMO’s Standard Marine Communication Phrases (SMCP).
- (K2) has knowledge of basic formation and tactical codes.
- (K3) has knowledge of intercultural communication within a multilingual crew.
Skills
Upon completion of the course, the cadet:
- (F1) can apply IMO’s Standard Marine Communication Phrases (SMCP) and use English both in writing and speaking with clear pronunciation.
- (F2) can communicate internally on the vessel and externally with other vessels, coastal stations, and VTS centers using relevant and correct terminology.
- (F3) can plan and carry out basic tactical formation maneuvers in a navigation simulator as part of a bridge team.
- (F4) can understand and use tactical communication codes in a navigation simulator as part of a bridge team.
- (F5) can understand and utilize information related to ship safety and meteorology.
- (F6) can communicate appropriately with a multilingual and/or multicultural crew.
- (F7) has the ability to communicate effectively and without misunderstandings.
General competence
Upon completion of the course, the cadet:
- (G1) has the language skills required to conduct a safe bridge watch.
- (G2) has insight into the importance and value of language in safety-related and administrative tasks in operational situations on board.
- (G3) can convey professional information in English, both orally and in writing.
- (G4) can exchange views and experiences with others from maritime/naval environments and thereby contribute to the development of good practices.

- Classroom instruction includes lectures, discussions, presentations, and problem-solving activities.
- Simulator-based exercises.
Guidance is provided individually or in groups.
Independent study: Students are expected to engage in theoretical work, complete assignments, and prepare presentations.
Emphasis is placed on integrating examples from other subjects and operational service to illustrate course content. The teaching methods are designed to actively involve and engage the student
