The course is divided into three parts: Statistics, discrete mathematics and economics. Discrete mathematics provides the cadets with knowledge and an understanding of certain concepts and problems in set theory and combinatorics, which contributes to logical and analytical problem solving in the field of engineering in the Armed Forces. Statistics will provide an introduction to basic concepts and methods in descriptive statistics, probability calculation, distributions and statistical methodology. This provides a basis that contributes to the understanding of information processing, and how statistical methods may be used for planning, control and in interpretation and decision phases. The statistics (5 credits) and discrete mathematics (2.5 credits) parts are taught and assessed together.

The economics 2.5 credits part of the course shall provide the cadets with an introduction to basic economic concepts and decision models, and give the students an understanding of economics. This forms the basis for conducting operations in the Armed Forces in a responsible manner where the economy is an aid to achieve this. The course builds on ING1502 Mathematical methods 1.
