Knowledge

After completing the course, the cadet has:

• an understanding of the basic principles of ship construction (civil and military)
• knowledge of a vessel's seaworthiness (civil and military)
• knowledge of the theories, principles and factors that influence a vessel's trim, stability and speed
• knowledge of proper and safe ship handling
• knowledge of national and international regulations and standards embodied in agreements and conventions designed to safeguard the safety of persons at sea and the protection of the marine environment.  
• an understanding of research and development work in the subject area
• the ability to update his/her knowledge within the subject area
• knowledge of the subject area's history, traditions, distinctive character and place in society

Skills

After completing the course, the cadet has:

• skills in using available data and tables on the vessel to ensure safe ship operation
• skill in applying relevant international rules, codes and standards for safe operation of the ship
• skills in establishing and maintaining effective communication with technical personnel in connection with the operation of the ship
• skill in establishing procedures for safe handling of the ship in all conditions
• the ability to reflect on his/her own professional practice and adjust this under supervision
• the ability to find, evaluate and refer to information and subject matter and present this so that it sheds light on a problem

General competences

After completing the course, the cadet will:

• be able to assess, plan and perform safe operation of the vessel with the ship’s design, stability, trim and buoyancy in mind
• be able to assess a vessel's seaworthiness
• be able to share key subject matter such as theories, problems and solutions in writing and orally as well as through other forms of expression
• be able to exchange views and experiences with others within marine technology and through this contribute to the development of good practice
• be aware of new thinking and innovative processes

Organisering

Emnet følger F og Ø timene i timeplanen i de ukene årsprogrammet for SKSK har undervisningsuke(UV uke). Undervisningen går over 15 uker, med 9 timer F og Ø pr uke. Timene bør gjennomføres i 2 firetimers økter, samt en økt hvor resttimen akkumuleres og gjennomføres i utvalgte uker. Undervisningsplanen viser fremdriften i emnet i form av ukeoversikt og delemne den aktuelle uka. Emnet bruker Itslearning.

Arbeidsmåter

• Klasseromsundervisning: Teorigjennomgang, gruppearbeid, beregning og gjennomgang av oppgaver, kadetter gjennomgår utvalgte oppgaver.
• Veiledningsstime: Kadetter regner oppgaver og får veiledning
• Selvstudium: Arbeid med teori, regning av oppgaver og innleveringene

• Bruk av skolens slepetank. (modellprøver, krengeforsøk, gruntvannseffekt.)
• Bruk av aktuelle PC-programmer innenfor konstruksjon, belastninger, intakt stabilitet og skade- / lekkstabilitet.
• Bruk av film / video
