4 March: Air Operations in the High North
The Nordic Chiefs of air force invite the media to Camp Bodin, Norway, Monday 4 March. The event marks a significant step forward in Nordic air defence cooperation: the first conceptual test of a joint Nordic air operations centre and the kick-off of the winter exercise Nordic Response 24.
The deadline for registration was 26 February 2024.
For the first time – the Nordic countries – together with key allies, will cooperate on a unified concept for air power in the Nordic region.
"The cooperation strengthens our regional security. With solid support from our key allies, such as the US and the UK, The Nordic countries will provide a credible military deterrence on behalf of NATO in the High North Region”. says Major General Rolf Folland, Chief of the Royal Norwegian Air Force. During NR 24, the general also serve as the acting air component commander for NATO's northern flank, on assignment from JFC Norfolk.
Present for the media:
- Major General Jan Dam, Chief of the Danish Air Force
- Major General Juha-Pekka Keränen, Chief of the Finnish Air Force
- Major General Jonas Wikman, Chief of the Swedish Air Force
- Major General Rolf Folland, Chief of the Royal Norwegian Air Force
There may also be participation from more allies.
The air operations centre, temporarily placed at Camp Bodin, is usually based inside the mountain facility at Reitan. The air operations centre will serve as the air component headquarters for participating air forces during the exercise. From here approximately 300 officers and specialists will plan, direct and assess air operations across the assigned operations area. It is important to note that this is a test of concept for this year's winter exercise, and not a preemption of either the location or command element within the NATO command structure.
Film and photo opportunities
As Camp Bodin is not an air force base, there will not be any aircraft activity on the ground at this location. Several aircraft will be directed to fly at relatively low altitude over Camp Bodin, hopefully ideal for photo and video recording. Please note that this is weather dependent. There will be significant military aircraft activity across the northern parts of Finland, Sweden, and Norway during the exercise.
Participation and accreditation
We invite media to cover the event. Participation requires registration and accreditation. The deadline for registration was 26 February 2024. Please note that there are a limited number of spots.
