NATO in the Nordics 2025
On 17–18 September 2025, scholars, military leaders, and security experts gathered in Oslo for the NATO in the Nordics conference, hosted by the Scandinavian Journal of Military Studies and the Norwegian Defence University College.
The conference addressed key questions on Nordic security in a shifting geopolitical landscape, with sessions covering defending the Nordics, total defence cooperation, multi-domain operations, military logistics, leadership and professional development, as well as deterrence and nuclear policy.
Highlights included keynote speeches by Professor Sir Hew Strachan, who reflected on emerging world orders, and Lieutenant General Ingrid Margrethe Gjerde, Chief of the Norwegian Defence Staff, who discussed the challenges and opportunities of a strengthened Nordic defence.
Through plenary talks, panel discussions, and roundtables, participants examined how NATO’s enlargement with Sweden and Finland impacts security in the High North, and how cooperation, technology, and education can enhance allied readiness.
